We have mentioned the importance of Medicare Enrollment Periods before, we want to repost the document here to emphasize the different periods that Medicare beneficiaries need to pay attention to.
The initial Enrollment Period (IEP) happens when you first become eligible for Medicare, or in another word when you turn 65. For example, if your birthday is 4/13/1956 then your IEP will be from January to July, so basically, it’s 3 months before your birth month, your birth month, and 3 months after your birth month- 7 months in total. Those who got Medicare before 65, will have a second IEP once they turn 65. This allows you to choose to stay with your original Medicare and purchase Medigap plus part D, part D alone, or Medicare advantage. The effective date can be the 1st of your birth month if you enroll before your birth month. Or it can be the 1st of the following month once your enrollment falls in your birth month.
Annual Open Enrollment Period or Annual Enrollment Period (AOEP/ AEP) happens every year from October 15th to December 7th. You can choose to enroll in a Medigap plan, Medicare Advantage back to your original Medicare, change your Medigap plan, or change your part D plan. The plan will be effective on January 1st of next year. You can change your mind within this period, the last choice will be your plan for the next year.
General Enrollment Period (GEP) is from January 1st to March 31st, you can enroll in part B if you didn’t join during IEP or SEP. If you don’t have part A and join part B during GEP, you have the choice to enroll in a drug plan between April 1st to June 30th. You may pay the late enrollment penalty if you are not qualified in the exemption categories. This period also calls Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (MAOEP) in 2019 (before 2019 it calls the Medicare Advantage Disenrollment period.) is the time of year when a Medicare beneficiaries can make changes to their current coverage.
The most complicated enrollment period is the Special Enrollment Period (SEP); you can make a change to your Medicare Advantage and Prescription Drug coverage. When you qualify for a SEP, begins the month of CMS approval, and lasts two additional months, so you will have 60 days following the event to enroll. Most likely is losing health insurance through your work or spouse’s employer or switching your employer coverage to get Medicare (63 days). Moving out of your area such as from one county to another, also qualify for SEP.
Medicare beneficiaries can prepare or gather more information to understand their right during the different enrollment periods to switch or change plans if applicable to the situation.
