【市場更新】

1. 本週市場小跌,媒體集中在總統大選及紓困方案的新聞報導,但在不確定的情況下,市場持續波段震盪。

2. 從本週的部分公司營運結果,我們可以看到消費者的消費習慣有所改變:

  • 不願意再自己煮,轉向餐廳外帶: Chipotle的第三季銷售較去年同期增長14%。
  • 在家時間變長,家電用品升級: Whirpool及Electrolux業績成長。
  • 清潔用品依然暢銷: Procter & Gamble以及Reckitt Benckiser (Lysol的母公司)業績成長及調升今年的業績展望。

1987年10月19日當天道瓊工業指數下跌22.6%,被媒體稱為黑色星期一。

本周一10/19市場下跌也有人歸因於黑色星期一33週年,雖然實際上沒有什麼關聯,我們藉由這個機會來回顧一下這個事件,以及目前的市場有什麼可以借鏡的地方:

背景

  • 股市長年上漲: 道瓊工業指數從1982年8月低點到1987年8月高點共上漲250.77%(一萬元變成三萬五千元),而1987年年初至8月高點已上漲44%。
  • 經濟趨緩但並未衰退: 美國的經濟在1980年初走出衰退後的急速擴張後開始降溫,但並未出現經濟衰退。
  • 崩盤前沒有壞消息或新聞: 媒體在崩盤後列出了部分可能原因,但普遍認為這些原因都不足以造成如此重大的影響。

市場發展

  • 至1987年10月16日週五為止,股市自8月高點回調17%。
  • 雖然週末股市未開盤,市場瀰漫著出脫股票的情緖: 不論是利用電腦模型的投資人(算是那個時代的量化投資人)、共同基金以及散戶在不同的考量下都急著在週一開盤時就出脫股票。
  • 開盤時的沈重賣壓導致股市下跌,由於賣方明顯多於買方,30檔道瓊工業指數成分股中有11檔延後開盤,收盤時道瓊工業指數下跌22.6%,自8月高點累計下跌36%。
  • 市場之後並未持續下滑,之後兩天股市分別上漲6%及10%,但直到1989年8月道瓊工業指數才回復1987年8月前高。

研究及評論(底線是TransGlobal加註)

a. 日後的諾貝爾經濟學家Robert Shiller在1987年11月提出了針對1000名投資人進行問卷調查的研究報告發現:

  • 投資人行為未受當天或周末新聞影響
  • 投資人買賣決策與他們認為在周末公布的各類新聞重要性關聯有限
  • 投資人的不安情緒遠超過當日交易量反映程度
  • 在崩盤前,許多人覺得他們可以預測市場
  • 買賣雙方大致同意崩盤前的市場估價過高
  • 大多數投資人覺得崩盤是受其他投資人心理影響
  • 許多投資人受技術分析影響

b. 基金經理人Ed Thorp認為黑色星期一的起因並非過度槓桿,而是太多人在同一時間作同樣的事

4. 除了上面的研究外,我們也要提醒投資人作好準備,在股市上漲時,資產配置一定比不上單純股市或是單一個股的表現,但在下跌時資產配置就能展現其價值。就如同我們買汽車險一定不會等到車禍發生才買,資產配置應該是在市場上漲時就該思考執行,如果是等到市場下跌時才從眾停損,往往為時已晚。

【疫情更新】

1. Moderna CEO在接受採訪時表示如果11月的臨床試驗結果理想,預期12月向聯邦政府申請Covid-19疫苗能在緊急狀況下使用。

2. 為因應日漸失控的疫情,歐洲領導人傾向採取更嚴格的管制措施。愛爾蘭已宣布未來六週非必要商業不得營業且頒布旅遊禁令。在北半球即將進入冬季的情況下,民眾轉入戶內將大幅提高病毒擴散的可能性。

【救市措施】

民主、共和兩黨仍在持續協商新紓困方案,隨著時間流逝,選後才會通過紓困方案的機率大增。紓困方案通過與否將重大影響失業者是否能持續消費、各州及地方政府員工是否將面臨失業風險及以及整體的失業狀況。
